Only one baboon species, the Chacma baboon (of the Papio ursinus group), is present throughout the entirety of South Africa. It is more commonly referred to as the Cape baboon.
This baboon is among the biggest you’ll find amongst the primate species. The chacma baboon, found largely in Southern Africa, engages in a wide range of social behaviours, such as a dominance hierarchy, group foraging, females adopting infants, and platonic friendships.
The Cape baboon can be found in a wide range of environments, from the lush alpine peaks of the Drakensberg to the arid Kalahari Desert.
In order to avoid being eaten by big cats, Cape baboons spend the night high up on hills, cliffs, rocks, or in very huge trees after sunset. Its daylight range in dry places may be constrained by the lack of water. With a lifespan of 25-30 years, the Cape baboon is a highly social primate.
Male baboons with particularly large canine teeth are dangerous because they may puncture a human or even a Leopard’s lung with a single bite. The incisors of a baboon can reach a length of two inches.
Because of its intelligence and keen eyesight, the Cape baboon is a notoriously difficult animal to catch. A male baboon from Southern Africa could weigh up to 40 kg.
In Southern Africa, baboon is one of the more reasonably priced game animals to shoot. One of the most challenging creatures to track down, Cape baboons are sometimes considered a pest threat due to their destructive habits toward crops, lodges, and domestic sheep and goat calves.
In order to alert the group to the presence of an approaching hunter, baboon troops often station sentries in strategic locations.
